GG/NG meaning: what both teams to score wins on, what NG needs, and how GG 2+ and the combos settle
TipsQuant editorial team · Updated
GG and NG are the shortest labels in a betting app and among the most searched, because the pair appears on every football coupon from Nairobi to Lagos and the app rarely explains them. GG means both teams score; NG means at least one does not. The market is the same as both teams to score, abbreviated BTTS in British-style apps, and it ignores everything about a match except whether each side gets on the scoresheet. This page settles the basic market on fixed example scores, then works through the variants that confuse people, GG 2+, GG with over 2.5, GG with the result, before explaining how the tips on our both teams to score today page are priced.
GG: what wins and what loses
GG, goal goal, pays when the home team scores at least once and the away team scores at least once. The timing of the goals does not matter, the final result does not matter, and the number of goals beyond one each does not matter. These example scores all win: 1-1, 2-1, 1-3, 4-4. These all lose: 0-0, 1-0, 3-0, 0-2. The moment the second team scores, the bet is won, and nothing that happens afterwards can undo it. That is one reason GG is popular with readers who watch matches live: it can be settled in your favour at half-time.
Own goals count for the side credited with them in the official record, so a 1-0 where the goal is an own goal by the away side is still 1-0 and still NG. Goals in stoppage time count; goals in extra time do not, because the market, like every market on this site, is settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
NG: the opposite side
NG, no goal, pays when at least one team fails to score. It wins on every clean sheet, whichever side keeps it, and on the goalless draw. The example scores 0-0, 1-0, 0-3 and 5-0 all pay NG; 1-1 and 2-1 do not. NG is not a bet on a low-scoring match, although it is often used as one: a 4-0 is NG and a 1-1 is GG. If what you really expect is few goals, the over 1.5 meaning page explains the under lines, which settle on the total rather than on who scored.
GG 2+ and the other labels with a number
Several apps in our region add variants with a number. The label is not standard, so the only safe rule is to read the market's help text before you stake. In the apps we have seen, GG 2+ means both teams score at least twice: 2-2, 3-2 and 2-4 win; 2-1, 1-1 and 3-0 lose. NG 2+ wins whenever at least one team scores fewer than two, which includes every score where a side has one goal. GG 3+ follows the same pattern one step up.
A different market, often shown next to it, is GG and over 2.5, sometimes written GG & 2.5+ or BTTS & over. That one needs both teams to score and a total of three goals or more: 2-1 wins, 1-1 loses on the total, 3-0 loses on the GG half. Readers mix the two up constantly, because "2+" and "over 2.5" look alike on a small screen. GG 2+ is about each team's goals; GG and over 2.5 is about the match total.
GG by half
GG in the first half pays only if both teams score before the interval. GG in the second half pays only if both score after it. GG in both halves needs each team to score in each half, which is rare and priced accordingly. The full-match GG is the ordinary market, and a full-match GG does not require goals in both halves: a 0-0 at half-time that ends 1-1 is a plain GG.
GG combined with the result
Apps also sell GG with the 1X2 result in one selection. GG and home win pays on 2-1, 3-1 and 4-2 but not on 1-1 or 2-0. GG and draw pays on 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3, and it is close to a correct score bet because so few scores qualify. GG and away win pays on 1-2 and 1-3. NG and home win pays on 1-0 and 3-0. These combined markets are priced by multiplying the two conditions and then correcting for how they depend on each other, which is why GG and draw is not simply the GG price times the draw price. The correct score prediction page is the quickest way to see which scorelines a combination is really betting on, because each combination is just a short list of scores.
How the model prices GG and NG
Every GG probability on this site comes from the scoreline model described on the methodology page. The model assigns a probability to every possible score, and GG is the sum of every score where neither number is zero. NG is one minus that. The raw Poisson version of that sum tends to be too confident about goals in both directions, so the goals markets, including GG and NG, are calibrated with a two-parameter correction fitted on one season and checked on the next. The aim is that a printed 60% lands about 60% of the time, which the track record page lets you check.
Where bookmaker odds are available, the model's number is blended half and half with the odds' implied probability after the margin is removed. A GG tip is printed at 58% or more and an NG tip at 62% or more; the bar is set separately for each side of the market. The fair odds beside each tip are one divided by the probability. At 58% that is about 1.72, and a GG price in the app above that is one the model considers generous.
What pushes a match towards GG
Two attacks that score regularly and two defences that concede regularly, in a competition with a high scoring level, and a fixture where both teams need something. The model captures the first three through its ratings and the competition setting. It does not see the fourth, and it does not see the team sheet. A side missing its main striker, a team defending a lead in the second leg of a cup tie, or a match played in heavy rain can turn a 65% GG into a 1-0. Those are the checks worth making before you follow a tip.
The common mistakes are the mirror of this. Backing GG on a match with a very strong favourite is backing the weaker side to score against a defence that rarely concedes; the favourite winning 3-0 is at least as likely as 3-1. Combining GG with under 2.5 leaves only 1-1 as a winning score, which is a correct score bet at a worse price. And adding GG legs to a long accumulator because they "usually land" ignores that a 60% leg fails two times in five.
Settlement and the small print
GG and NG are settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Abandoned matches are void on this site and, in most apps, refunded unless both teams had already scored, in which case some bookmakers pay GG early. Postponed matches are void. Any bet, GG included, can lose, and a run of NG results in a week of favourites is ordinary. This site is for adults aged 18+; the how to bet page covers the rest of the coupon, and the responsible gambling page explains the deposit limits worth setting.

Frequently asked questions
What is the meaning of GG/NG in betting?
GG stands for goal goal, meaning both teams score at least once in the match. NG stands for no goal, meaning at least one of the two teams finishes without scoring. It is the same market the English-language apps call both teams to score, or BTTS, with yes for GG and no for NG.
What is GG/NG 2+?
In the apps that use this label it is a stricter version: GG 2+ means both teams score at least two goals each, so 2-2 and 3-2 win while 2-1 loses. NG 2+ is the opposite and wins when at least one team scores fewer than two. Check the market's help text in your app, because labels with 2+ are not standard across bookmakers.
What does yes GG/NG mean?
Yes is GG: both teams score. No is NG: one or both do not. Some apps show the market as BTTS with yes and no, others as GG and NG, and a few show both on the same line. They settle identically.
Does the result matter for GG?
No. A 1-1 draw, a 3-1 home win and a 1-4 away win are all GG. Only the question of whether each side scored at least once is settled. Combined markets such as GG and home win are separate bets that add the result on top.
Is GG settled on 90 minutes?
Yes, including stoppage time, and not including extra time or penalties in cup ties. An own goal counts for the team it is awarded to. A match abandoned before the end is void unless the bookmaker's rules say otherwise.
Where are the GG and NG tips on this site?
On the both teams to score page, where the model prints GG at 58% probability or more and NG at 62% or more, each with fair odds. The bar for NG is set higher than the bar for GG; both come from the same calibrated GG probability, since NG is one minus GG.
