Championship predictions: England's second tier for the week, with the table and the model's tips

TipsQuant editorial team · Updated

The Championship is the most played league in England and one of the hardest to predict anywhere. Forty-six rounds, a midweek round most weeks, and a table where the gap from top to bottom is far narrower than in the Premier League: those three facts explain most of what you will see on this page. The fixtures for the next seven days come first, with the model's 1/X/2 probabilities; the table follows; and the tips filtered to Championship matches sit below.

Why the Championship produces fewer tips than its size suggests

A tip needs a probability above a threshold, and the Championship's compressed ratings keep many matches under the line. A typical fixture between two mid-table sides prices out near 40% home, 28% draw and 32% away, which is nowhere near the 55% a favourite needs. The 1X2 tips that do appear are mostly the top clubs at home to the bottom few, and even those sit in the high fifties rather than the seventies you see in Spain or Germany. Readers who want the longer list should look at the double chance market on the 1X2 predictions page, where a home-or-draw on a Championship favourite clears 80% more often than the straight win clears 55%.

Goals in the Championship

The division's scoring level is a little below the Premier League's, but what matters more for betting is its variance. Teams change shape and form from one month to the next, promoted sides arrive from League One with ratings earned against weaker opposition and relegated sides arrive with Premier League ratings that take a while to decay, and the model is still learning both groups well into autumn. Over 2.5 tips here come mostly from matches involving the two or three attacking sides of the season; under 2.5 tips cluster in the winter when pitches and fixture congestion drag scores down. The over/under goals meaning page explains the lines if you are new to them.

Midweek rounds and the fatigue the model cannot see

The Championship plays Tuesday and Wednesday more often than any league we cover, and a side playing its third match in eight days is a different side from the one the ratings describe. The model only notices when results change. Treat a midweek favourite with slightly more suspicion than a Saturday one, especially in the second half of the season, and treat the goals probabilities on the Tuesday after a Saturday round as a little softer than usual.

How we pick, and how to read this page

Every probability here comes from the Dixon–Coles adjusted Poisson model described on the methodology page, with calibrated goals markets and a 50/50 blend with bookmaker odds where available. The Premier League predictions page covers the division above in the same format, and the weekend prediction page gathers Saturday's and Sunday's tips across every competition.

Any bet can lose, and in the Championship the favourite loses more often than in any other league on this site. Bet only if you are 18+, stake what you can afford, and read our responsible gambling page before you open an account.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have Championship predictions for today?

On a matchday, yes. The fixtures table shows the next seven days with today's matches first, and the tips tables below are filtered to Championship matches only. The same tips also appear on the prediction for today page beside every other competition.

Why are the Championship favourites priced so low?

Because the league is closer than the Premier League. The ratings of the top and bottom clubs are nearer to each other, so the model rarely produces a home win above 60%, and the 55% threshold for a 1X2 tip is cleared less often. That is an accurate description of the league, not a flaw in the model.

Is an EPL Championship prediction made the same way as a Premier League one?

Yes, by the same model with the same thresholds. The Championship has its own fitted scoring level and home advantage, and clubs that move between the two divisions keep their ratings, so a relegated side arrives in the Championship with a rating earned in the top flight, weighted down over time.

What time are Championship kick-offs in East Africa?

The usual Saturday 15:00 kick-off in England is 17:00 EAT during British summer time and 18:00 EAT in winter, with midweek matches at 21:45 or 22:00 EAT. Nigeria is two hours behind EAT and Ghana three. The site converts every kick-off to your local time.

Are play-off matches included in the Championship predictions?

The play-offs are priced like any other fixture when they are in the data, but extra time is possible in the semi-final second legs and the final, and any tip on a match decided after 90 minutes is void.
